Step By Step Process

1. Evaluation & Initial SmartSoc Scanning

Your baby’s evaluation can be done in the comfort of your home or in-office. During this visit, we take detailed scans and photos to document head shape. Based on these results, a personalized treatment plan is developed, and a referral is provided if helmet therapy is recommended. If helmet intervention is recommended we walk you through the helmet process, including the importance of consistent wear (about 23 hours a day) and what to expect during treatment. You’ll leave with a personalized plan and a clear understanding of the regular follow-up visits that help us track progress and make adjustments as your baby grows.

2. Helmet Fabrication & Delivery

A new scan is used to custom-fabricate your baby’s Orthomerica cranial helmet. Helmets are typically delivered and fitted within two weeks of the scan. Delivery and follow-up can take place either in your home or in-office for maximum convenience.

Three protective helmets in pink, gray, and white with ventilation holes and adjustable straps.

3. Follow-Up Appointments

We schedule a one-week post-delivery follow-up to ensure proper helmet fit and confirm full-time wear. After that, follow-ups occur approximately every three weeks to adjust the helmet as needed and take new scans to monitor cranial growth and progress.

4. Discharge & Completion

Once your baby has achieved the desired correction, we determine the appropriate time to end helmet therapy in consultation with your pediatrician or physical therapist. Final scans and photos are taken to document the results.

Smart Soc vs StarScanner

The Orthomerica SmartSoc scanning system offers a more comfortable, efficient, and family-friendly experience compared to the traditional Orthomerica StarScanner.

With the StarScanner, babies must lie flat and remain completely still during the scanning process, often requiring multiple attempts, sometimes 10 or more, to obtain an accurate scan for measurements and helmet fabrication. This can be stressful for babies, parents, and clinicians.

In contrast, the SmartSoc system allows babies to remain comfortably in their parent’s arms and move freely as the scan is taken

The SmartSoc captures a highly accurate 3D model of the head without the need for repeated attempts. The process is simple and gentle and the entire scan is typically completed in under 10 minutes. The result is a faster, more relaxed experience without compromising the precision needed for effective cranial helmet treatment.

At Guided Growth Strategies we use the Orthomerica SmartSoc scanner to measure and fabricate your child’s helmet.
